The endowments of Columbia University and Barnard College, respectively, exceeded $7.8 billion and $215 million as of 2011. Where is this money? Certainly, some of it is invested in major fossil fuel corporations - the very ones whose business models are committed to the destruction of our environment. Climate change is upon us, and time is running out to halt and reverse the damaging effects of greenhouse gas emissions. Barnard Columbia Divest! is a campaign committed to the divestment of our schools' funds as we fight for the future of our planet. Divestment is a process by which stockholders (in this case, Columbia University and Barnard College), liquidate their stocks with certain institutions or corporations (in this case, the fossil fuel industry). Corporations like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, and other oil, gas, and coal companies are among the ten highest-grossing corporations in the world, and make their money off of environmentally damaging and immoral methods. We intend to demonstrate that our school's investment in major fossil fuel corporations is unacceptable, and we encourage that Columbia and Barnard take the initiative to distance themselves from the environmentally unfriendly practices espoused by the fossil fuel industry. Columbia and Barnard's divestment would send a clear message to the worldwide and academic community that the fossil fuel industry can no longer get away with the destruction of our environment - of our future. Barnard Columbia Divest! is part of a national movement among college campuses to divest from fossil fuel.To learn more about divestment, the fossil fuel industry, and campaigns like ours, please visit fossilfree.org and divestforourfuture.org Join the movement of our generation!
