One for the World Columbia is a student-run philanthropy group founded in Spring 2017 as a constituent part of One for the World, with the express goal of combating extreme poverty in the developing world. Established at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 2014, One for the World has two drives: to offer Columbia students educational programming about effective altruism and philanthropy more generally, and to secure from students a pledge of 1% of future earnings to their preferred selection of One for the World’s portfolio of highly effective charities. One for the World Columbia aims specifically to help Columbia students balance the seemingly disparate demands of career and altruism by presenting students with a robust, diverse portfolio of the most highly performing charities in the world to which to channel their giving, thereby ensuring that students’ philanthropy has maximal impact, and by presenting a distinct concept of how to do good in the world. Ultimately, One for the World Columbia endeavors to eliminate extreme poverty in the developing world, to create a culture of giving on Columbia’s campus, and to build a robust network which altruistic Columbians will be able to leverage and contribute to throughout their lives.
