Columbia-Barnard Young Democratic Socialists of America
Political & Advocacy
We are the Columbia-Barnard branch of the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), the student & campus section of the largest and fastest-growing socialist organization in the U.S. Our aim is to organize to build our collective power and win material improvements for students and workers, as well as to create spaces for political education and to contribute to broader movements against capitalism, oppression, and for collective liberation. We are a big-tent organization and welcome anyone who identifies with the left. Some of our basic principles, taken from our Tasks & Perspectives document, include: 1) A commitment to building a fighting, democratic labor movement, and the centrality of the labor movement to all socialist struggles. 2) Our support for reforms such as Medicare for All, College for All, a Green New Deal, and other demands that empower working people, nationalize key sectors of the economy, and counter austerity. 3) Our commitment to building up independent working-class politics and organization. 4) Our understanding of the relationship between the fight for socialism and the struggles against racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of oppression. We are a signatory to the demands of Columbia University Apartheid Divest and support their demands for disclosure, divestment, and amnesty, and in addition, push for university democratization in order to fight for those demands. We are also internationalist and anti-imperialist, and support groups like Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace who are organizing for Palestine solidarity. Additionally, we are an abolitionist organization, and support movements to defund the police as well as other #8toAbolition demands. We support groups on campus like Barnard-Columbia Abolitionist Collective who are organizing around issues of policing, gentrification, and racial justice. In the past, our chapter has organized around the DSA for Bernie campaign, strike solidarity for the graduate workers' strike, and housing justice during COVID. Currently, we're organizing a Fair Tuition campaign to win a 10% tuition reduction, 10% reduction in all other fees, 10% increase in financial aid, and waiver of the work-study requirement for next semester, as well as a tuition freeze at this reduced level for all future semesters. We welcome anyone who's interested in organizing on or off-campus to join our chapter. Just fill out our membership interest form and someone will be in touch soon!
