Students for Environmental and Economic Justice
Political & Advocacy
Students for Environmental and Economic Justice aims to give students a structure through which to pursue their own initiatives addressing environmental and/or economic justice issues.
An initiative we started last year and hope to continue is called Infracktion, an initiative designed to educate people about hydrofracking and to prevent use of the practice in New York. To this end, we hosted speaker Deborah Rogers of Sane Energy Forum to speak about the economic realities of hydrofracking. We also screened the movie Gasland and published an op-ed in Spec asking Columbia to consider the consequences of its decision to use natural gas.
We have also hosted panels on federal environmental regulation and the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and hope to start a volunteering project with Harlem Grown, a community garden organization.
