The UC Davis Genetic Counseling Club (GCC) provides exposure, resources, and support to the UC Davis undergraduate community regarding continuing education and careers in Genetic Counseling through workshops, speaker events, and information sharing. Despite being one of the fastest growing occupations in the country, genetic counseling is not widely known and the profession is lacking greatly in both diversity and numbers. One of the goals of the Genetic Counseling Club (GCC) is to expose the UC Davis undergraduate community to the profession of genetic counseling. We will provide a variety of resources such as information about genetic counseling job, volunteer, and internship opportunities, along with genetic counseling graduate programs, as well as exposure to the various settings in which genetic counselors work through presentations given by licensed genetic counselors. Our hope is that our fellow student members will graduate with a keen understanding of what it means to be a genetic counselor and develop sharp critical thinking and presentation skills regarding both scientific and psychosocial genetic counseling research. They will feel confident in their knowledge of how to select, apply, interview, and succeed in a Genetic Counseling master's program, and continue to engage in and benefit from our strong sense of personal and educational support by participating in events such as guest speakers. A line-up of guest speakers is arranged each quarter, consisting of licensed genetic counselors, current genetic counseling students, and medical geneticists. The opportunity to network with other future genetic counselors in the group is a valuable resource as we believe a strong sense of support in this community will strengthen both the professional and interpersonal skills required of the students interested in this career. We believe these resources, events, and student-centered support will be extremely helpful for our members as they begin to discover genetic counseling programs and continue their journey to becoming a genetic counselor.
