About the OrganizationDiscover. Engage. Commit. Launched in 2010 by students at the Ross School of Business, the Detroit Initiative at Ross (DIR) supports Ross students passionate about discovering the city of Detroit, engaging with Detroit communities, and supporting impactful causes within this great American city. To do so, the organization lends opportunity to engage in consulting projects with Detroit nonprofits, mentor Detroit high school students interested in business, plan a conference involving stakeholders across the city, and partake in cultural events within Detroit.Impact Projects: DIR pairs groups of students with organizations in Detroit to work alongside nonprofit leaders to drive community impact. Students have worked across an array of organizations with some focusing on child literacy while others support food and housing insecurity. Mentorship: DIR partners with high schools in Detroit to pair Ross students with mentees interested in business careers. The Detroit students travel to Ann Arbor throughout the school year to learn about foundational business concepts and work on a capstone project, which is presented during the final session. The inaugural Detroit Impact Conference, 2010 Focus Detroit, began the process of introducing business students to the city of Detroit. Ensuing conferences took the discussion further, shifting the conversation about Detroit at the University of Michigan to one of opportunity and possibility. The club also focuses on planning events in Detroit and providing exposure to city leaders and historians.
