The Geriatric Interest Group (GIG) plans to introduce medical students at UMMS to both geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry and the importance of these specialties. The organization will host seminars, facilitate faculty mentorship, and encourage students to shadow faculty who specialize in the fields of geriatrics. The goals of GIG are to foster a specific interest in geriatrics, while also emphasizing the wide-ranging nature that a background in geriatrics has for all medical professionals. Early exposure to the principles of geriatric medicine and psychiatry will create better future-physicians as they treat older adult patients.
