Our organization is divided into three branches: Clinical, Research, and Social Investment. The Clinical Branch partners with HELPS International and focuses on recruiting medical professionals and other volunteers in the Emory area, fundraising, and creating educational content for the short-term clinical trips that occur normally over summer break. Beyond delivering clinical care and important health information to a destitute community in Guatemala, the trip also sees the team involved in community development by installing clean cookstoves and water filters in local households. The Clinical Branch has been forced to reinvent the wheel during the pandemic by focusing on how to strengthen the efficacy of the trip while waiting for the opportunity to travel again. The educational content has been put into a virtual format and the team has created plans for a greater emphasis on capacity-building in future trips. The Social Investment branch works to create professional opportunities for aspiring youth in rural Guatemala that would otherwise be unable to access the required education and expertise. This team fundraises to pay for their education and living expenses, as well as organizes tutors to prepare the students for standardized tests and exams. These efforts have continued rather unimpeded even in a virtual format. The Research Branch consists of the Grant Writing committee, which works to generate funds to support research projects, and the Evaluation and Metrics committee, which is in charge of creating instruments to evaluate the success and sustainability of the work done by the two other non-research branches. Recent research projects include clinical patient feedback and small focus groups to understand how the Guatemalan community would perceive a WhatsApp educational chatbot. There many external committees that support the organization as a whole, including Marketing, Event Planning and Community Building, and Treasury and Campus Affairs.
