Hapa: a word of Hawaiian descent that defines a person of partial Asian or Pacific Islander descent. The word “hapa” is used globally among the mixed-race community. We use it to embrace our identities, which can prove to be difficult in a world where many expect us to choose just one race. “Do you feel more Asian or more white?” is a question that is all too familiar to many of our executive board. Why can’t we be both? These questions led us to the formation of HAPA, Boston University’s Half-Asian People’s Association, in order to create a community where students of any mixed-race background can convene to form bonds with others who have shared similar experiences. Though the group’s name states Half-Asian, we welcome any student who has struggled with their racial identity or is simply looking for a group of friends.Through bi-monthly on-campus meetings, we aim to foster a community where mixed-race students feel comfortable and understood. We already attend a school where students hail from numerous backgrounds and cultures, and HAPA hopes to further expand the meaning of diversity and inclusivity at Boston University.
