The Black Studies Graduate Student Organization (BSGO) strives to be a beacon of support for graduate students within the African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) Department at the University of Texas at Austin. The main purpose of the BSGO is to act as a liaison between faculty, graduate students, and TAs in the department. We exist in the tradition of Black Queer and Feminist praxis. Accordingly, we advocate for the concerns and experiences of all graduate students, and especially those most disenfranchised among us due to gender, sexuality, and ableism. We understand Black struggle in the context of Diaspora; our collective liberations are inextricably linked. To address the interlocking concerns of our graduate student body, care is at the center of our work. The BSGO operates as liaisons between faculty, graduate students, and TAs in the African and African Diaspora Studies Department. As beacon of support for AADS graduate students, we strive to consolidate graduate students’ opinions, concerns and ideas, suggest strategies and facilitate changes to improve overall departmental communications and collective experiences.
