The Last Writers is a service-oriented organization at the University of Texas that allows students to interview interested hospice and palliative care patients in Austin. Students write the life stories of their paired patient and family in a memoir format over the course of a student semester. The finished memoir is published as a physical hardcover copy and presented to that patient and their family at no cost. We hope to aid in the grieving and healing through companionship and by providing a lasting memento for family and friends. Members will learn more about narrative medicine, the intersection between the humanities and medicine, improve patient interactions, and gain service hours.
