Our mission: Texas Ballroom strives to foster an appreciation for partner dancing at every skill level, further the art and sport of ballroom dance, and maintain an engaging social atmosphere in which any individual can learn and grow as a dancer. Competitive ballroom, Latin, and country dance are completely new and foreign to most undergraduate students in the United States; the most common exposure to any partner dance being Dancing with the Stars or the occasional cotillion. Our mission is to introduce this rich and vast world to the University of Texas community. We teach dancers from the ground up, starting with beginner classes that focus on teaching partner dance as a social activity, accompanied with social events and team building activities. Our beginner classes give new members a broad introduction to many different styles of ballroom dance, and serve as a foundation for a long term social hobby and skill. The social events and friendly atmosphere provide a community of supportive peers that is crucial for any student during their time at university. Many members are satisfied at this level, and our organization is honored to have helped instill in them some of the valuable lessons that come from dance. Other members decide to pursue competitive partner dance. For these dancers, we provide advanced technique and performance coaching, as well as a team atmosphere that inspires confidence and perseverance. Texas Ballroom attempts to make the barrier of entry to competitive ballroom dance as low as possible. We organize travel, lodging, registration, and partner matching, and we keep a collection of donated costumes and shoes for our members. Through our club, competitive dancers also get coaching from some of the best professional dance coaches in the Austin area. Whether casual or competitive, our members develop an appreciation for dance that lasts a lifetime, and form social groups to support them in college and beyond. With COVID-19 putting enormous strain on many student’s personal and academic lives, it is more important than ever for students to have a network of friends and an emotional outlet to help them through this difficult time. Texas Ballroom is part of the Healthy Student Organizations Program (HSOP), and is an official UT RecSports Sport Club.
