The WCC functions as a central hub, providing personalized guidance to individual students and student organizations. It serves as a welcoming space for students to connect, fostering a sense of community on campus. The center’s staff offers support and advice, addressing students’ concerns effectively. In collaboration with various campus and community organizations, the WCC ensures that all UT students can access essential resources and support services. This comprehensive approach aims to empower students, enabling them to excel academically while navigating the challenges of a large campus. The center’s goal is to foster a strong sense of connection among Longhorns and with the university at large.
The road to establishing the WCC goes back decades. After students separately established the Women’s Resource Center in 1997 and the GLBTA Agency in 2001, the two groups decided to pursue a joint center in the spring of 2002 to demonstrate greater student demand and establish an organization that would have greater long-term sustainability. The groups benefited from a new Dean of Students, Teresa Graham Brett, who was sensitive to women’s and LGBTQIA+ issues, and a new Student Government President, Brian Haley, who campaigned on a promise to establish a Gender and Sexuality Center. A proposal for a Gender and Sexuality Center was approved in March 2004 and its doors officially opened in August of that year. In January of 2023, because of Senate Bill 17, the Gender and Sexuality Center became the Women’s Community Center, but the center’s commitment to making sure that all Longhorns feel like they belong at UT Austin is still in place.
