The Hepatitis Project was started in 1999 in response to an epidemic of hepatitis C virus infection among substance users on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Through the hepatitis project, medical students volunteer their time at the Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center where they provide free Hepatitis and Flu vaccines to the Center’s clients, and also provide counseling related to the risks of hepatitis transmission/infection. Our site reaches a diverse population of at risk individuals. Though our service, we work to not only to reduce transmission of hepatitis A and B and help those infected, but also educate medical professionals on how to effectively interact with and educate drug users and other at risk populations. Through this, we aim to rebuild trust between individuals with high risk and the medical community and encourage access to needed medical care.
