The Medical Student Doulas and Prenatal Partners Program will provide medical students with the opportunity to learn about social determinants of health and the patient perspective as they support families prenatally and in the delivery room. Further, we will be working with a Reproductive Choice Clinic to provide support individuals while they receive medical care. The primary aims of the Medical Student Doula/Prenatal Partners Program are three-fold: Medical students as doulas: We will provide full spectrum doula training for medical students interested in volunteering with us. These students would then have the opportunity to use their skills by working as a volunteer doula on Labor and Delivery, in a Family Planning Clinic, and through a phoneline service. Reflection and education: Monthly meetings would provide an educational and safe space for student participants to reflect on their experiences and learn more about factors impacting prenatal, postnatal, and neonatal health through group exercises and guest speakers. Prenatal support: We hope to expand the program to provide prenatal services to families as patient navigators/partners. A specific plan for this aim will depend on further exploration of how medical students can provide the most effective support to patients.
